How to Fix a Blend Door on a 4th Gen Dodge Ram (2009–2022)

The 4th Gen Dodge Ram (2009–2022) shares the same notorious HVAC weakness as its predecessor — plastic blend doors that crack and fail over time. If your Ram 1500, 2500, or 3500 is stuck on full heat or cold, or you're hearing a popping noise from behind the dash, a broken blend door is almost certainly the cause. Here's how to fix it permanently.

What Is a Blend Door?

The blend door is a plastic flap inside your HVAC box that controls the mix of hot and cold air flowing into the cab. On 4th Gen Rams, the OEM plastic doors are prone to cracking under years of temperature cycling. When they break, you lose the ability to control cabin temperature.

Symptoms of a Broken Blend Door on 4th Gen Ram

  • Stuck on full heat or full cold regardless of temperature setting
  • Loud popping or cracking noise from behind the dashboard
  • Temperature works on one side but not the other (Dual Zone models)
  • Blend door actuator clicks or grinds continuously

Single Zone or Dual Zone?

Before ordering, confirm your HVAC configuration:

  • Single Zone — one temperature control for the whole cab
  • Dual Zone — separate driver and passenger temperature controls (check your center console)

Blend Door USA kits include CNC-machined aluminum replacement doors that permanently outlast OEM plastic. Choose your configuration:

Related Parts to Replace While You're In There

Since you're already in the dash, inspect and replace these at the same time:

Step-by-Step: Blend Door Replacement

  1. Disconnect the battery — always before any HVAC or electrical work.
  2. Remove the lower dash panels — access the HVAC box from the passenger side footwell.
  3. Disconnect the blend door actuator — unplug the electrical connector and remove the mounting screws.
  4. Open the HVAC box — remove the screws along the box seam to access the interior doors.
  5. Remove the broken door(s) — pull out all cracked or snapped plastic pieces and fragments.
  6. Install the Blend Door USA aluminum doors — follow the kit instructions for proper seating and orientation.
  7. Reassemble and test — reconnect everything, reconnect the battery, and cycle through the full temperature range to confirm proper operation.

Pro Tip

While the HVAC box is out, this is the ideal time to replace the A/C evaporator if it's been leaking or underperforming. We carry both 4th Gen evaporator fitments — 2009–2011 and 2012–2022.
